    Hep20 or something else?

Now I know why the bidet in the en-suite that I removed (wife doesn’t like them) had its own cold supply from the (shared) header tank in the loft.

Where on earth is my roof aerial?

Is it running off Wi-Fi? Try interrogating the TV to see what input it is using.

    Extending T&E cable behind plaster

You are going to be filling holes in the wall anyway so if you can lift the floorboards above replace the cables to the sockets and have the joints in the floor space above. If you ever need to get to them you just lift the floorboards again.

Cut into live mains cable with metal stanley knife..

Long time ago worked in York Carriage Works, electrician came back from lunch and forgot the power was on and reached in to an electrical connection box with a spanner. Probably 1000V DC, he just had a nice burn on his hand from the spanner. Any guesses to the brand of the spanner?

How to deal with a window when building a stud wall in a bathroom

Yes, he is hanging the toilet on the stud wall! They are fine if you are bolting them to something good and solid but you need to be certain they will stay put if a large relative/friend uses it.

How to determine angles for building an internal stud wall in a window bay

Cut a piece of board with parallel long edges, one edge to sit on the window frame and the width that will match where the inside edge of the framing will be. Use this and a level/plumb line to mark the inside of the frame on the floor. Of course this assumes the window angles are right.

    Hive wiring queries

Jusr rewired the wiring centre in line with diagram above with adjustments due to wiring centre being in the landing cupboard and boiler, supply FCU and controller being in the utility room . All working fine, boiler fires regardless of whether heat or HW is turned on. Didn’t record what it was...

    Hive wiring queries

We haven’t had one plumbed that way before and have had houses built in the 1860s, 1950s, 1970s and 2000s.

    Hive wiring queries

Definitely all pumped, there is a three way valve (Plumb Centre branded) so it has been replaced at some point as they weren’t called plumb centre when the house was built. We have had gravity HW in the past and they have larger bore pipe for the HW (which this doesn’t ) and there is a long...

    Hive wiring queries

Possibly doing what it is doing now - HW and heating generally used at the same time. Hw on only and the boiler doesn’t strike up.

    Hive wiring queries

It worked before we changed it …… But. …….. It was always with heating and hot water at the same time. Single channel clock so couldn’t run them at different times so it may have had the same behaviour before without us noticing as both were generally on. When heating wasn’t wanted we...

    Hive wiring queries

Fitted a hive system last week and while the hive is working it isn’t switching the system as expected. The boiler is a Potterton Kingfisher (about 45 years old) previous controller was a Potterton EP2000 (heating and water switching at the same time). Y plan with 3 way valve. We get hot water...

One gang twin switch including intermediate

Thanks, looks like CEF stock them. Looked at the layout again and it needs a 2 gang intermediate so 1x2 gang plus 2x 1 gang intermediates.

One gang twin switch including intermediate

Looking for a twin switch with at least one intermediate (not worried if it is two) but those I can find, including grid switches, all have rounded faceplates. Can anyone point me at one with this profile as everything also in the house looks like this (although way older)...

    Wireless alarm recommend

Was about to start a similar thread, we will be moving home in Feb and I don’t particularly want to be running cables for a wired alarm. Looking at Ring / ERA. Son has a Ring system which seems OK. Which are the most reliable and simplest to set up, which are to be avoided? Not worried about...

    2 wire thermostat question.

We are fitting wardrobes to an 80s house we moved into last year. Having removed the ancient ‘robes there were four cables running down the corner of the wall. One coax which is redundant. Two twin & e which are redundant And….. one twin and earth which is the supply to a room stat. OK...

    Flat lift stuck

Not very lift is on ropes, some are on hydraulic rams and they can gradually lose height if the power is shut off. Used to work in a 2 storey building with a lit like this, it developed a problem and the facilities manager propped the first floor door open (lift at first floor) and barriered it...
