    engine check light over 70mph

My immediate thoughts are that the coil pack is failing at high revs. It's a relatively cheap part and simple to fit if you're DIY savvy. Another good source of information is the Vauxhall Owners Forum at: http://www.vauxhallownersnetwork.co.uk/forum.php

    Riello burner struggling to ignite

Tell me about it! Originally I'm from Northants. It can take some getting used to, living up here.

    Riello burner struggling to ignite

It's OK, I'm not really having a go at you professional guys. Living out here in the middle of nowhere you do have to accept that you won't have access to the same level of service that we had back when we lived in Northants, and that's why many of us turn our hand to jobs that otherwise we...

    Riello burner struggling to ignite

Ah, that old chestnut, eh? ;) According to HMRC it's 45p/mile for the first 10,000 miles and 25p/mile for anything over that :) I'm not quite sure what your point is, though.

    Riello burner struggling to ignite

Warning taken and appreciated, oilhead, but I do think your use of 'clever' is derogatory. I don't pay someone to change the oil, filters, spark plugs, or brake pads on our cars, or even a new exhaust - I can take care of these jobs myself - but I don't mind paying someone to fit new tyres or...

    Riello burner struggling to ignite

Thanks burnerman. I appreciate some of this kit does cost a lot of money, and requires the skills to operate it that I'll acknowledge I don't have - I wouldn't try - but where it's something straightforward I don't mind getting my hands dirty. Thanks oilman. Done.

    Riello burner struggling to ignite

It was serviced by a heating engineer just under a year ago when a new fuel pump was also fitted. We live in a remote location and the nearest heating engineer is based more than sixty miles away. He charges 50p per mile (both ways) on top of whatever the job and parts cost. If he has two...

    Riello burner struggling to ignite

Finally got a bit of dry weather to go outside and check this. Found the photocell liberally coated with soot. A quick clean and replace and the boiler lit-up first try. Still worth giving it a proper service but for now it's up and running again.

Thanks for the replies, folks. It's a Grant Combi 90 installed external to the house.

    Riello burner struggling to ignite

Have an oil-fired boiler for central heating and hot water with a Riello burner that has recently been having trouble igniting. It tries half a dozen times or more before succeeding. I'm going to fit a new nozzle as the first step and see if that cures it. I'll give the photocell a clean...

    Loft Stairs

The stairs themselves are tucked away in a small room which has a 30 minute firedoor fitted between it and the main passageway. The loft could in no way be considered habitable as the roof isn't lined and would be very draughty. The stairs have been anchored to very substantial joists in...

    Loft Stairs

One of our lofts has been floored and Velux windows installed by a previous owner. They also installed fixes stairs. Am I right in thinking that so long as the loft is used just for storage then fire regulations don't apply with regards to safety zones and fire doors, etc? This would be the...
