    Whooping noise from boiler!

Arghh! Condensate tube blocked solid, fan running in water - needs replacing, heat exchanger leaking and needs replacing, burner assembly corroded and needs replacing. No CH or hot water until next week. JOY!

    Whooping noise from boiler!

My Baxi 100 HE has suddenly started making a noise like a police car siren shortly after firing up. Very very loud. It literally goes whoo, whoo, whoo! No way of really describing it - but never heard anything like it before - any ideas please?

    Baxi 100 HE

Update: The central heating works if the heating and hot water are turned on (Newlec NLC21 programmer). However, once the water is hot enough the system closes down until enough hot water is used to produce demand for the boiler. Hot water on its own is also OK. Room stat has been...

    Baxi 100 HE

Could be - nothing visible without taking it apart in some way - which I have not investigated - not even sure how to. It has stopped working again by the way :(

    Baxi 100 HE

My boiler failed to fire yesterday. Had a quick look - no mains light on. Checked fuse - seemed OK so intend to call an expert. Today it switched on no problem. Green light on and all OK. Later it went off although still on on the timer - no green light again on boiler so presumably...

    Shower bulb

Now sorted - bulb has come apart when removing - leading to confusion. Pity no one else realised this so they could help me.

    Shower bulb

I am trying to change the bulb in my shower fitting - without success. Any ideas - 1. what sort of bulb this is 2 how do I change it?

Circulation problem - and my plumber is desperate!

I am pretty disappointed too! May at least take up the recommendation for the S A wine - I was there earlier this year but did not come across that one :) Another few days of this and I might take you up on the other idea - but sadly I live near Stockport - just south of Manchester so it is...

Circulation problem - and my plumber is desperate!

The vent which you say must be closed - was until yesterday when it was changed to an automatic one by the new guy! I will ask the previous guy who is having another (possibly brief) go on Wednesday) about the one on you suggest on the flow :)

Circulation problem - and my plumber is desperate!

In fairness - I don't think I can do everything everybody has suggested - for a start I am sure that some of the advice will conflict with other advice and in any case practicalities have to be taken into account - including the fact I am incapable/unwilling to "DIY" when it comes to CH plumbing...

Circulation problem - and my plumber is desperate!

Oh hell! The return follows the route similar to this - and I just presumed the flow was doing the same - you can't see it of course. Maybe from what you say the flow simply continues at the higher level of the laundry room/garage floor into the cylinder cupboard. Might make it easier if this...

Circulation problem - and my plumber is desperate!

Unless I am confused - yes that is how the pipes run (and certainly no secret from the plumbers!) There is a combined cold feed and vent which runs down from the F&E in the loft to meet the hot feed in the cylinder cupboard. Not sure what the problem with this is. I feel sure I have...

Circulation problem - and my plumber is desperate!

I may get the guy to try the pressurising again even though the boiler is not strictly suitable. Then run it for a few days to see if continues working well. If so - I will have two choices - a new condensing boiler fitted in a sealed system (£ouch!) or accept the risk of the boiler leaking and...

Circulation problem - and my plumber is desperate!

No it doesn't have the stat. Not sure about your other point - getting beyond my knowledge (not difficult :)) But the two engineers who have been stumped so far have about 80 years experience between them and they can't spot anything. There is certainly a vent in the cylinder cupboard (now...

Circulation problem - and my plumber is desperate!

It was certainly backfilled from the mains, either from there or from the new vent in the return pipe in the garage.

Circulation problem - and my plumber is desperate!

Think we may be at cross purposes! The pipes from the boiler do not run back down to the garage floor level - they start there at the boiler (as per photos on page 4) . They run from there up the garage wall, through into the laundry room, along there at high level boxed in, down to floor level...

Circulation problem - and my plumber is desperate!

No - boiler in garage, cloakroom at same level i.e. ground floor. Cylinder cupboard on floor above (2 storey house). It is a suspended floor - but inadequate room for crawling under. And the pipes from the upstairs are boxed in to form part of the wall adjacent to fitted furniture, worktop...

Circulation problem - and my plumber is desperate!

Thank you for that Tony - to me the two points of major significance are that it worked for 30 years as it was and it worked when pressurised. Any discussion of the current plumbers obsession with plastic and ideas about different plumbing layouts are really irrelevant. I have had another...

Circulation problem - and my plumber is desperate!

I think the flow from the boiler comes up from the garage through the cloakroom etc, appears at the back right of this cupboard and is met by the combined cold feed and vent coming down from the F&E in the loft. It then goes off left to the pump. No pipes disconnected as far as I know - and...

Circulation problem - and my plumber is desperate!

If I could easily - I would (and may of course have to). But it travels down inside some boxing into the cloakroom, through recently expensively fitted furniture, under a recently fitted tiled floor (tiles no longer available either) and will be a pig of a job unless I (or rather the engineer)...
