RCD connected mower, cut through live cable, should this happen?

ahhhhh THANKS for that Andy! you know what; thinking about it I can't be 100% sure if the RCD did trip, but the fuse and MCB certainly did. the mower made a meal of the live cable and after a brief spark it all stopped. Was just surprised the MCB tripped, which is beyond the RCD in my...

RCD connected mower, cut through live cable, should this happen?

13A 2-Gang RCD Switched Plug Socket Metal-Clad, connected in the garage as part of the MCB managed plugs. Think they are a spur rather than a ring. this morning, I finally did the very thing I had had the sockets installed to protect against  Should the 13A fuse in the mower plug have...

    redirect an exiting flue?

ahhh ok sound advise taken, thank you both (y) bit strong to have to condemn the boiler on the grounds that I went and built my garage downwind from the existing flue! but I will bide my time and wait for it to fail, then go modern and ensure the flue isn't anywhere near my door...

    redirect an exiting flue?

have a dated gas boiler, which heats the central heating AND hot water (works fine BTW). Unfortunately the flue exits approx. waist height, straight out into the path of my workshop door. Sending hot air (not a bad thing when its cold) and fumes (not a good thing at all!) when it kicks in early...

Garage - no earth on second radial socket

EFLImpudence, ya made my day! (y) your advice on how to test the circuit spot on! that brought a smile to my face as it proved there was continuity on the Line(Red) and CPC(Earth). I did also disconnect Socket A from the supply before testing, didn't know if I should have? Replaced Socket B...

Garage - no earth on second radial socket

excuse the crude drawing, its late, I'm tired and this socket problem has me cheesed off! so I ran lights & plugs from Shed 1 to Shed 2. Two separate cables through conduit to get between sheds, and it was a pig to pull! T&E from socket A to socket B.... But I was pretty certain that I...

boiler problem: got heat, no hot water, taps make it click

having gone back to the Helpline with these findings it was suggested that the micro-switches where at fault: On the replacement part, there are 3 terminals on every micro switch and there is an additional fixing screw. Also the left fixing screw is much longer, although the new...

boiler problem: got heat, no hot water, taps make it click

cheers Mickey, surely the pump and fan MUST work for the heating??? that fires, clicks and farts all as it should... any way to manually trigger these by bypassing the micro switches? (that unit comes out pretty easy, as I had to remove it to get at the water valve)

boiler problem: got heat, no hot water, taps make it click

it does sound like micro switches clicking (funny enough) when I crack open the hot tap, it just doesn't seem to fire the gas or the big ignition, as it where. As at test I've just left the heating running for a couple of hours and its all warm and toasty and not a drop of water under the...

boiler problem: got heat, no hot water, taps make it click

 yes I know my Saunier Duval 623 combi boiler is well past its best before date and yes i know they are prone to leaking like a sieve once they reach a certain age... However @ 3.5K for British Gas to replace the unit, I'm going to have to make do again this winter! :!: For 6months it...

1930s walls, flush fitting electrial boxes

yes approx 13mm thick, its made of two layers, one a thick concrete like plaster and the second a kinda brick....its as though the stud structure, typically made of timber, is in fact formed of cream coloured blocks if that makes sense? :? Just looking at Lath & Plaster of Wiki...

1930s walls, flush fitting electrial boxes

so I read up on the pros and cons on these very pages. I invest in enough cutting equipment to put a second channel tunnel in place :? The Screwfix catalogue becomes my bible and I order 35mm metal back boxes like they are going out of fashion, so I can get the wires in without a struggle. As...

about to redo our small bathroom (6ft x 5'10") contains: Shower (plan to have an overhead electric extractor light), toilet and sink. We have a large opening window, which is usual ajar when showering Do we need to keep the air brick/hole we currently have? (approx 11" x 10")...

    SWA how to present

Eddie, John, thanx...both give some food for thought. The reason I ask, was last time I went through the wall with SWA it was a pain to get it to lay flush as it came out the exit hole (you cant bend it 90 degrees). So could I terminate in a metal box outside? (and weatherproof that in...
