can we change to a combi?

We have recently moved to a house with an ancient floor mounted Baxi Boiler (FS601 OF). It works fine, but we would like to change it for something more energy efficient. However, we have been told by a plumber that it could be a problem fitting a combi if we have a single pipework system...

British Gas quote for new boiler

wow!i never knew the topic of boilers could get so ,well, heated. nickso, whatever you do for a living,it is obviously very stressful. we are both self-employed so spend quite a lot of time off our backsides!sadly, this does limit the amount of posts we have time to read,so we just confine...

British Gas quote for new boiler

nickso, mate get over yourself. perhaps if you had the brains to read the posting properly, you would note that at no point did we mention making a claim.we did bother to read the stuff which is how we knew what was covered ! as for lazy and idiots, the phrase pot and kettle spring to mind.dont...

    sealants

not really looking for one that stays pliable.just something to seal around the waste (our plumber tells us this is vital),from the shower to the drain.it is in a downstairs room with a tiled floor,so we are less bothered about the odd drip than he is.still,it is good that he is so particular.

    sealants

have any of you plumbing experts out there ever fitted a free-standing shower cubicle(just requires wall behind) as my plumber is reacting as though i have asked him to fit the tardis in my bathroom (which i suppose it is in a way) anyway he has apparently never even heard of them before,let...

British Gas quote for new boiler

we had a boiler fitted by b.g. recently. found we could have sourced the boiler ourselves for literally half the price! the service agreement is a sweetner. the basic one is fine, have your boiler serviced etc, etc. the one they are offering as a sop to disguise the astronomical prices they charge...

    re-wire haywire electrics

dear johnd. thanks for that suggestion.will do. it is not a massive house.1930s 3 bed semi with 20ft kitchen extension and a garage. we wouldnt expect an accurate survey"blind" just a rough idea what is deemed reasonable as the quote, whilst stating what needs doing, doesnt split it into parts and...

    re-wire haywire electrics

thanks daz for the link, thats really helpful.to johnd,no it wasnt a free survey.we are just a little puzzled as the full house survey flagged up one or two points but not a full rewire. the house has been rented out to tenants,so we expected it to have reasonably safe wiring to avoid...

    re-wire haywire electrics

help. we have just had an electrical report back on our proposed new house.the company reckon the place is a death trap and needs a total rewire immediately to the tune of £4/5,000!!!! as we havent been in this position before,is this a fair price? should we get a second opinion?are they having...

    electric boilers

slugbaby, thanks for the link.looks like it will be the boiler in the garage option. whilst gas isnt a chemical it can and does cause a prob. for people with mcs.it could be the insulation (polyurethane)insulation on the boilers themselves.who knows? we just know it is a prob.every time we run...

    electric boilers

o.k. the boring reason. i (viv) currently have chemical sensitivity (not just chemicals though) so cannot run the gas boiler which is sited in our kitchen.pain in axx as it was only fitted in feb! so we were considering an electric one as a possibility in our new house.it would need to serve 8...

    Laminate flooring on stairs

we are buying a 1930s house and plan to rip all the laminate out.! i have seen laminated stairs though with a sort of rubber and metal strip along the edge where the treads and risers meet. wont it make your stairs a bit slippy in your stocking feet if you laminate them.?

    electric boilers

we are thinking of having an electric boiler installed in our new house (for reasons we wont bore you with!) to run the heating only.we have read mixed reviews, but are quite keen if we can find out if one would be up to the job and whether the domestic electricity supply is also up to the job.we...

    asbestos pipe

thanks nige, due to the circs. i am no doubt a bit paranoid! we will be using a corgi fitter,as the boiler needs to go anyway as its about 15 years old and the bloke who owns our prospective house has,on his own admission ,never had it serviced.

    asbestos pipe

thanks for assorted advice.dont need to send off sample as we KNOW it is asbestos and people do die of it. as it is we have found a company who will come and remove and dispose of it safely, which is a weight off.

    asbestos pipe

we are just about to buy a house with an old baxi boiler which we intend to have changed for a more efficient model. the problem is that the pipe is made of asbestos and we do not want to endanger ourselves or the fitter when it is removed(having lost my dad to asbestosis recently) do we need to...
