we are just about to buy a house with an old baxi boiler which we intend to have changed for a more efficient model. the problem is that the pipe is made of asbestos and we do not want to endanger ourselves or the fitter when it is removed(having lost my dad to asbestosis recently) do we need to get in an independent expert to remove it?

There is no need to go mental over asbestos made flues, avoid them if you can (wear a dust mask) you won`t die if you remove an asbestos pipe

seriously try to remove it in sections without breaking it

IF YOU REMOVE IT WITHOUT BREAKING IT IT IS SAFE, GETTING RID OF IT IS THE PROBLEM. DOUBLE BAGED AND SEALED .STATING CONTAINS ASBESTOS IF MY MEMORY IS CORRECT
Mix a little PVA glue with water and spray on to any cracks/broken bits if they happen this will help keep the fibres down.Wear mask and double bag/label as others have said
thanks for assorted advice.dont need to send off sample as we KNOW it is asbestos and people do die of it. as it is we have found a company who will come and remove and dispose of it safely,which is a weight off.
Really sorry to hear about your dad.........but if you get a proper Corgi reg. fitter to do the boiler change , the pipe will be taken care of by them.........and it IS a negligible risk .......It`s the lagging in old commercial systems that is more dangerous ..........luckily? I`ve only been in a few like that years ago....but I do wonder sometimes
thanks nige,due to the circs. i am no doubt a bit paranoid! we will be using a corgi fitter,as the boiler needs to go anyway as its about 15 years old and the bloke who owns our prospective house has,on his own admission ,never had it serviced.
asbestos cement pipes are only ten % and can be removed without specailist help, any builder can remove it.
if you call a asbestos removal company then expect high prices, i too had an asbetos pipe but it was the soil pipe to sewer, a asbesto's company wanted in excess of £2000 whilst the odd job man wanted £900 to remove and replace existing pipe.
your local authority will have a skip especailly for asbestos cement pipes and roofing, its free and does not need double wraps and all that just place it in the skip(take a disposable dust mask as you will find high levels of dust in the skip floated around.
word of caution do not break the pipe as this would be how the asbestos is released into the atmosphere, when removing the pipe do it from the outside and seal the inside to prevent airborne particals remaining in the property. dust from breakage from 10% asbrestos is negleble and the chances of person breathing it whilst being carried in winds ect are minimal so dont worry about airborne particles outside.
you can check this with your local authority as i have done, just get on with the job.
if a corgi try's to price higher due to the pipe then they are ripping you, the ratio of risk by airborne particles (ventilated area) are below 1% i think the figures given by authorities are something like 0.159%
