Which rooms in my house have to have egress windows?

OK, cheers. :) I did read that in several threads on here but it does make sense to add egress windows where possible. I just wanted to make sure I wouldn't create more trouble for myself by making a point of telling the planning guys that I was adding egress windows and then somehow failing...

Which rooms in my house have to have egress windows?

Hi, I have done a search on here and found a few relevant threads but I wanted to double check with my specific case. I am planning going to be changing out my old 1996-build wood frames windows for PVC as a DIY project. I have been on Planning Portal and downloaded the relevant regs, but...

Problems with oil boiler after fitting fire valve

Thanks. That's the kind of reply I was looking for. I knew you could get different temperature ratings for fire valves, but the only selection info I could find said to always use 65degC. I'll measure the actual temp inside the case and find out if mine is faulty or simply inderrated, as...

Problems with oil boiler after fitting fire valve

I had a new oil tank and supply line installation (done and certified by an OFTEC registered tradesman) last summer. As part of the job he fitted a remote sensing fire valve to my oil suppy line. It is a KBB 65degC type. My oil boiler (like most boilers, I guess) has a hot water loop...

1A fuse - legal and available in the UK?

Okey dokey. Thanks for the replies all. :)

1A fuse - legal and available in the UK?

Ok, that's all good then Plenty of options (well....two anyway). In the case of the 1A fuse, can anyone calculate or estimate the start up current for a 50W halogen running off a 60VA 12VAC transformer?

1A fuse - legal and available in the UK?

Thanks for the fast reply. I take it the picture means that you can indeed still get plug-top sized 1A fuses? Assuming the fuse blows instantly, there's no issue with putting a 3A fuse on a 3A flex. However, I'd feel happier with something lower. As I said in my original post, I suspect...

1A fuse - legal and available in the UK?

Quicky: I'd like to use a 1A fuse to protect a low power circuit that is wired using 3A flex. Although I used to have a collection of 1A fuses in plug-top size, they now seem to be unobtainable. Maplins sell 1A fuses in the 20mm x 5mm size. Would this fit in a plug top and would it be legal...

Replacing low voltage outdoor light with 240VAC

Thanks for the replies. I thought it was a long shot, but no harm in asking :) For background info, the previous lights were in fact infra-red LED spotlamps designed to work with a surveillance camera without anoying the neighbours. A neat solution, hampered only by the fact thay they plain...

Replacing low voltage outdoor light with 240VAC

I had a low voltage outdoors light which ran off a 3A twin core cable, but because it was not bright enough I want to replace it with a more powerful one. The cable run is buried in the walls, so I don't want to replace it. Of course, the mains spotlights (I'm looking at 150W, so the 3A cable...

Low wattage panel heaters on dedicated circuit

Not sure I understand :( Maybe I'm using the wrong terminology for what's in the walls. I was simply proposing to use the old cable channels to pull through new wires to save having to channel into the walls. Two of the rooms where the heaters will go don't need to be re-decorated, so this...

Low wattage panel heaters on dedicated circuit

Thanks for the replies :) If we go the ring route, the general idea is to make a ring with three junction boxes, one directly above where each of the heaters will be. This will be roughly in the same place as some of the old sto9rage heaters were. The conduit is still in the walls, so the old...

Low wattage panel heaters on dedicated circuit

As part of my girlfriend's CU refurb she's getting her 60A main feed upgraded to 80A, so more current to feed into more toys :-) As she doesn't have any "easily tun on and offable" central heating (house used to have night storage heaters, now removed) she is thinking of buying up to three...

    Help identifying earth type

I don't know about the earth on the light circuit, I'll have to check that, but do know there is indeed no earth sheathing on the earth wires in the junction boxes in the loft. Her Wylex CU is definately a 60A model. Given that the guy that installed her second CU for the shower tolde her...

    Help identifying earth type

That's the kiddy. Hers has had a big hole cut into the cover to allow the MCBs to poke through, though. No idea what the wiring is actually screened in - It looks like regular red and black 2.5 T&E but the conductors are stranded rather than being solid.

    Help identifying earth type

Pretty sure its a Wylex - its a horrible old yellow-creamy coloured thing with a black switch on the right with a moving "on / off" indicator. I feel like I'm taking my life in my hands every time I touch it. I think what you are saying is pre-empting the next part of my line of enquiries...

    Help identifying earth type

LOL - well, I know it might sound a silly question, what with the sticker and all, but it is just a sticker. I just wanted to confirm it from first principles because the electrical history of the house is a bit shady. Some of the wiring in the loft is (forgive the pun) shocking. ;) I'll...

    Help identifying earth type

Cheers for the replies so far. SO... just to labour the point, can I be resonably certain that the earthing system is PME (which I believe uses the neutral incoming wire - hence the connection to the 60A fuse)?

    Help identifying earth type

My girlfriend is in the middle of a kitchen refit and has uncovered a bit of a mess of a CU installation behind a removed cupboard. It's what I shall call an "old style" CU with twin blade type modules that look like they used to have rewirable fuses. These have all been retrofitted with...

    Boiler whine when cold.

*Bump* Right - last night I ran the boiler without the water pump, and the water pump without the boiler, and both together. The only combination that didn't make the noise was just the water pump on its own. I also went from the loft tank to the boiler grabbing onto all the pipework as I...
