How do I drain a downstairs radiator on a microbore system if the pipes run from an upstairs manifold?

Yes, I cut a hole in insulation so that the sensor is touching copper, but water still way too hot. How would you fit a sensor band to an insulated cylinder anyway, do you have to strip off the insulation right round the tank?
