    3 Port Power Head Trouble?

Cheers Mandate, you'd also posted on a couple of other threads today that were helpful. I've checked the voltages on grey and white wires also to make sure the problem isn't elsewhere. But, the actuator is stopping at the mid position and not going on to the CH only position. So, from...

    3 Port Power Head Trouble?

Another one... The heating has decided to stop working. It worked OK last week. The CH thermostat switches on, but the boiler doesn't fire. If I turn the HW on at the same time, the boiler fires and both water and radiators are heated until the HW thermostat turns off and everything stops...

Brown tint to water with rust residue

I called the water board last night and they said there have been no works recently and nobody in the area has reported any problems. The road was dug up by the gas board a few months ago, but that's it. The water man did give me a reference and tell me to call back if it doesn't sort itself...

Brown tint to water with rust residue

Thanks for the replies. There's been no work done on the plumbing or heating recently. The last work was in April when the boiler was serviced. Heating has been off since late spring. About two years ago, I replaced the entire bathroom suite and the asbestos water header tank with a...

Brown tint to water with rust residue

Pretty old Potterton Netaheat. It's a standard gravity system with no mains feed to it.

Brown tint to water with rust residue

Thanks for confirming that. But you don't get rust in copper pipes, right? And the pipe in the bathroom is plastic. Which leaves the old and probably lead mains pipe as the source of the rusty water. But then why does it not come out of the kitchen tap and only the bath tap?

Brown tint to water with rust residue

The kitchen cold tap and bath cold tap upstairs are both fed from mains. The last couple of days when we run a bath for our boy, the water has a brown tint and there is tiny rusty bits settled on the bottom of the bath. After some experimentation this is what I've found: - The bath cold...

    Repainting an interior wall

Hi, I want to paint over an internal wall that is currently dark purple matt emulsion. Having done a similar job some time ago and gone for the approach of applying multiple coats of the new colour until the old colour is gone, gone, gone I would like to know if there is a better way...

Yep, I'll accept that. Just trying to get out of digging a few holes really. Materials ordered (plus an impact driver as a reward for myself). Will let you know what happens..

    Decking Support Posts

Here's an image of my plan - just ordered from the timber merchant. (I refer to perpendicular joists as those that run perpendicular to the house running top to bottom of the image. Parallel joists are those that run across the image, parallel with the house.) Went for the maximum...

    Decking Support Posts Distance

Thanks. It just seems odd that some joists are made bounce free by bolting to posts and some aren't supported from underneath. Like you, I'm guessing the noggins and deck act to support those joists. In which case the noggins are more than just for frame rigidity and become structural -> i.e...

    Decking Support Posts Distance

For simplicitly, lets say I deck an area 1.5m x 1.5m. - I'd set 4 posts in the corners. - I'd bolt four joists around the posts to form the outer frame. - Then I'd add another joist down the middle at 1m to have 500mm centres. My question is what's stopping that middle joist from...

    Decking Support Posts

So, having read almost eveything on deck posts/joists and looked at the excellent guide http://www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/diy/decking/index.htm, I have a question. The Ultimate Handyman shows a picture with posts positioned every 1m with joists attached to these. However, there are joists...

    Central heating noises

Have sorted out the rad valve and now have all rads fully vented and 100% hot. The pump is still making the noises though and I can here gurgling in various places. Any top tips for chasing air out of a system?

    Central heating noises

One radiator is half full of air, although it certainly wasn't like that a week ago. Unfortuntely the bleed screw has seized up so am going to have to replace the whole valve bit later this week. The whooshing noise definitely starts when the pump kicks in after the boiler has cut out. Must...

    Central heating noises

Plenty of water in F&E, float valve working. Closed gate valve on mains feed to float valve and drained about a litre from a couple of rads and the F&E water level dropped accordingly. Noticed that the water draining from the radiators was very slow - hardly any pressure. Is this normal...
