Brown tint to water with rust residue

I called the water board last night and they said there have been no works recently and nobody in the area has reported any problems. The road was dug up by the gas board a few months ago, but that's it.

The water man did give me a reference and tell me to call back if it doesn't sort itself out within a couple of days. It will then be passed over to the scientists...

If you are not on a meter then I would suggest that you turn off the water heater and run all the taps for an hour or so.

That should wash out all the pipes and probably will be the last you see of the problem.

Have you been able to resolve this problem as mine is similar, but ihave brown silty water coming from the hot tap when the boiler is on. In addition the boiler is making banging noises too, i have drained the system and bleed the rads but has made no differance.

If you have a solution please let me know

Craig, best to start another thread and not hy-jack this one as your problem is cylinder related and most certainly needs a new one.

Sounds to me like its the remobilisation of discolouration material from the water mains up stream of your property.

Its not often that I am rude to anyone but really Dominic what you have said above makes me think that you are an idiot and certainly not any kind of expert as you claim.

This person says the discolored water comes from the hot tap.

That means that it comes from the hot tap and NOT from the cold mains.

If the discoloration was coming from outside the property then it would be seen on the cold mains water.

Its only on the hot supply which indicates a problem with something in the flat.

I too would never be rude to anyone, however I was actually answering the question posed by the originator of this thread, who clearly had a problem with the water supply to his house:

The kitchen cold tap and bath cold tap upstairs are both fed from mains. The last couple of days when we run a bath for our boy, the water has a brown tint and there is tiny rusty bits settled on the bottom of the bath.

Neighbours haven't noticed anything. Water board say nobody else in the area has called about this.

You quoted another post with similar symptoms but caused by an entirely different problem originating from within the property.
