Help preparing an existing fireplace for an electric insert

Hello, I've just spent the entire day ripping out an old 50's stone/tile fireplace identical to the one in wallace and grommet lol. All old crud is removed and it's now stripped back to the bricks. Now I want to put in an electric insert and surround in its place since the condition of the...

Loud oscillations from Ariston combi boiler - please help

=========== gas4you wrote: As a guide that Vaillant 831 I fit uses 3.3m3/hr max, whilst the 837 uses 4m3/hr You should find that 3.3m3/hr is ok on 22mm copper up to 12/15m (equivalent length) David, you often mention this "rule of thumb" that you seem to work to. I do have to say...

Loud oscillations from Ariston combi boiler - please help

Hahaha :D, what planet are you on? It's standard practice to obtain more than one quote to get a job done. As a customer, you'd be foolish not to. As a tradesperson, it's part and parcel of doing business. Get real man.

Then that just goes to show you that you are ignorant of the law. Its certainly not illegal for me to install my own boiler Mr x-man. I challenge you to prove otherwise. The guarantee is valid from the date of installation, not the date of purchase. OK, so what's the problem then bripl...

Loud oscillations from Ariston combi boiler - please help

You're continued snide comments are demonstrating to me that you never asimilated your mothers teachings about being polite. Actually, one person said 8.7% and I wanted to verify this with Ariston; the internet is full of misleading information. You obviously haven't read the Ariston...

Loud oscillations from Ariston combi boiler - please help

I phoned Ariston and learned some useful facts. 1. The manual is wrong, the correct air/gas ratio figures are 8.7% as suggested here. 3. The manual is also wrong in saying the minimum gas pressure is 17mbar, it should be 20mbar, however the techsupport person said I would get away with...

Loud oscillations from Ariston combi boiler - please help

OK, i've made some measurements. My gas pipe is about 2m long and has about 5 L bends, 22mm dia all the way until it reaches the boiler connection, where it narrows to 15mm. There is a 22mm T just before the boiler leading to the stove. The reason it has so many bends is that it comes out from...

Loud oscillations from Ariston combi boiler - please help

Hi Agile, Yes screw 4 is the outlet pressure adjustment. If you care to scroll pack a few posts, you'll notice that I have a TPI709. I'm of the same opinion now, that the gas pressure simply isn't high enough for this boiler, even though the manual says min 17mbar and I'm measuring 19mbar...

Loud oscillations from Ariston combi boiler - please help

Yes sorry, it's the "gas valve" BTW the manufacturer calls it a "multifunctional 1:1 gas/air control for gas burning appliance" :) Yes I did normalise the instrument in fresh air during turn on as per the instructions for that instrument. I've noticed that if I unscrew "screw 4" at top of...

Loud oscillations from Ariston combi boiler - please help

My maximum is already 8.7 +/- 0.2, its the minimum that's at 9.2 +/- 0.2 as per the manual. So to clarify, are you telling me to set the minimum down to 8.7 as well? Thanks, Mark.

Loud oscillations from Ariston combi boiler - please help

So what are the correct/expected figures? I measured 19.5mbar at the mixer inlet test point at full power, 23 when idle, do you really think a deficiency of 0.5mbar is going to cause this problem? Thanks, Mark.

Loud oscillations from Ariston combi boiler - please help

Well the manual says 17mb is sufficient.. ???? so why do you say 20? I used a TPI709 to do the setup. The gas pressure was measured with a non-digital monument mannometer on the gas mixer inlet test point.

I've double checked, the manual definitely says 8.7 % at maximum power and 9.2% at minimum power. Is this at odds with the norm?

Loud oscillations from Ariston combi boiler - please help

Ok, this Ariston ACO 32 combi boiler is still oscillating loudly and I'm running out of ideas. It has a short vertical flue of about 1.5-2m. The noise is very loud when cold and continues for about 10-15s before fading away, but after it's warmed up and been running for a few minutes, the...

Which size spirit levels are the most useful for GP use?

You guys aren't helping me much, there doesn't seem to be any kind of consensus, everyone has a different pick! BTW, GP = "general purpose" for the person who asked what I'm going to use it for. For example, leveling window cills, checking tiles are level, worktops, etc.

Which size spirit levels are the most useful for GP use?

Hi, I'm considering buying a new spirit level(s), but I'm bewildered by the sheer number of sizes available. What sizes do professionals use the most often? Any recommendations also greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mark.

    Multimeters

Yeah go for the fluke's every time. The thing about em is that if you do accidently connect em to the mains on ohms setting, then you just need to replace a couple of fuses. The cheaper ones will do a mission impossible immitation and self destruct in a plume of purple smoke :D

Setting up a plumbers tool kit

I'm surprised you guys use those stilsons, the teeth are terrible things that ruin anything you try to turn. Why don't you use an adjustable automotive wrench with a smooth face? They'd do the job just as well as far as I can see and are v.strong. Is there a reason why you need the teeth on the...

Setting up a plumbers tool kit

Wow, thanks corgiman, you've got some pretty fancy kit there! Kev's right, you'd better keep it safe. I was wondering if anybody actually used stilsons since they are so brutal and tear the hell out of anything you try to turn with them. What size do you use? > loads of screwdrivers Are...

Loud oscillations from Ariston combi boiler - please help

Ah, so it's actually the flame oscillating, very interesting. Yes the boiler is about 2m away from the meter. I've done the install myself. I've bought a manometer today to check the pressure and I'm going to hire a FGA next week to do a proper setup as per the instructions. I'm not a...
