End play problem with (SDS+) drill (edited) when using a long 450mm drill bit

Update Wickes agreed to exchange or refund the bent drill bit if I could find a straight one in the store. 4 on the shelf, only 1 was straight. But there still seems to be excessive end play. In the mean time Wickes Customer Service Technical have advised that the end play I describe is...

End play problem with (SDS+) drill (edited) when using a long 450mm drill bit

Definitely SDS plus. Rolling it on a worktop shows a slight bowing which definitely should not be there so I will exchange it and keep posted.

Can you add an electronic or magnetic in-line descaler to an electrolytic one?

I live in an especially hard water area, (Basingstoke). I have just installed a new Hot Water and Central Heat system. I asked to be fitted a Fernox electrolytic descaler to my water supply. I am also aware of magnetic descaler units and mains powered magnetic field/electronic descalers. Is...

Kitchen mixer with pull-out spray - compliance with Water Regs?

But how? I have some understanding of siphoning, but you need suction to get that process going too. How can you have negative pressure in a mains water pipe? A link to a diagram might help me.

Kitchen mixer with pull-out spray - compliance with Water Regs?

"could result in contaminated water being drawn back into the pipework if the supply pressure dropped. " I can understand water pressure reducing, but how could mains water pressure actually become negative, sucking water (or air) back up the public pipework? I live in an area where the mains...

New system: Thermal Store or Gravity fed and thermostatic mixers

We are having our small detached house enlarged by about 50% to a total internal volume of roughly 250 cu m. It is 1956 brick built and apart from there being no CW insulation in the original walls (yet) the planned insulation will be about the current standard. We are now researching a water...

    Intergas HRE 30/36 Thermal Store

I am actually thinking of getting a thermal store to run with my present Intergas Compact HRE 24 OV which was installed 3 years ago. We are in a house we are extending to 4 bedrooms and having replumbed. The plumber is waiting for me to decide. Without hijacking, any points to watch for welcome...

Remove Crittall French Windows without damaging

We have a pair of galvanised steel, presumed to be Crittall, french doors which need to be removed without damage, to be re-fixed internally in an existing internal archway which may need resizing and is in a solid internal brick wall. We won’t be keeping the present glass but will replace with...

Tricky loft header tank insulation job

I may not have explained properly, but I was trying to explain why the warm air can't help the top tank the same way as it helps the main tank, as the main tank is brought into the insulated space of the house, but the top one isn't, as it is 2 feet above the insulation layer.

Tricky loft header tank insulation job

The open vented header tanks in my loft are arranged one on top of the other. The main feed to the HWC is mounted on the joists, and the central heating header is mounted via a combination of a horizontal roof strut and a batten secured to the brick chimney wall, so that there is about 2 feet...

    Is loft board permeable

But what about vapour rising through the ceiling board, which I believe is permeable? The underside of the board is on the cold side of the insulation, after all

    Is loft board permeable

I intend to board my loft floor on 7” loft legs after adding glass fibre insulation over the joists. There are no condensation issues at present and I will continue to monitor this. The ceiling below is plasterboard from the 1950s and there is no vapour barrier. My question is, as I cannot...

Singing noise related to water pump

Problem solved. Singing noise completely gone. Plumber replaced the Grundfos with a DAB 40-70/130. Whether the Grundfos was faulty or there was an incompatibility with my system we will never know. Thanks for all support.

Singing noise related to water pump

Yes, copper and the heating engineer didn't use a lot, so there is an indication for using these, but on the other hand when you hold the pump tight or hard up against a firm object, it doesn't reduce the noise at all. The engineer is returning soon I hope and has talked about replacing the pump...

Singing noise related to water pump

Since our central heating system was upgraded in October we have noticed a singing noise in the house when the water circulating pump switches on. It is a new Grundfos UPS2 15-50/60 pump with 3 speeds. Reducing the speed reduces the noise but it doesn't go away, and we need to use the maximum...

Rockwool vs glass fibre and availablity of 150mm thickness

I have previously asked about materials for loft insulation and have come down in favour of insulation roll, loft legs and standard loft board. I want to increase my loft insulation from 4” glass fibre to 10” and retain access and storage using wickes 7” loft legs and standard loft boards...
