Our kitchen has been fitted a while but only now getting round to tiling. Where the working surfaces run along one wall, there is a gap of over an inch between the surface and the wall on the left graduating to nothing on the right. How on earth do I tile? Please help somebody if you can? :?

Does anybody have any tips for getting a good line between the painted wall and the top of the skirting? It's an old house and we've got no gaps but it always ends up looking messy and spoils the rest of the room.
