Update: Vaillant engineer came today and was 99% sure it was the valve, he even got one from his van however it turned out to be the relay on the timer so he swapped it and the valve opened. Job done you would have thought. He was booked in to do service and discovered the filter was clogged...

Excellent. It looks like it was a bicycle pump job that seems to have resolved the issue. I don't remember seeing that in the manual. Got an excellent 'plumber/engineer' recommended by an equally excellent plumber/engineer to sort it. Thanks all for your advice. It is appreciated
