Clean block paving before or after extending it?

Thanks Ian, I really hadn't considered doing that. I guess I was concentrating on having the project all finished and gleaming, but there is some merit in leaving it for sure. Cheers.

Clean block paving before or after extending it?

Hi, I'm extending my driveway with more permeable brindle block paving (+35sqm). The existing driveway is grubby and needs a good wash and re-sand. The new blocks are second hand (so that the weathering kinda matches) and also in the same state of needing a good wash. Cleaning 2000 unlaid...

Maximising Useable Height in Block & Brick Garden Room

I didn't know that this existed, very interesting! I will have to do some digging (figuratively and literally).

Maximising Useable Height in Block & Brick Garden Room

Thanks. The size definitely brings in some challenges.

Maximising Useable Height in Block & Brick Garden Room

I've heard this, but wasn't sure if this was an official written or unwritten rule, or simply down to the individual building control officer being prgamatic. Any ideas? I'd hate to commit to a design building this advantage in only to find they say no.

Maximising Useable Height in Block & Brick Garden Room

Thanks for the info. The idea of smaller buildings is one that I had considered actually, mainly because there is a slight gradient across the garden, nothing major but enough to make the 2.5m max heigh a challenge end to end without digging down at one of them! Smaller buildings could mitigate...

Maximising Useable Height in Block & Brick Garden Room

Thanks, very interesting. I would be at the boundary on three sides (all just fences, no neighbouring buildings). The only windows would be on the fourth side facing back down the garden towards the house.

Maximising Useable Height in Block & Brick Garden Room

Thanks all. Some food for though there. One other question, is there any limitation on how close we can build (under PD) this structure to the boundary? Anything in regs for minimum access etc? Cheers.

Maximising Useable Height in Block & Brick Garden Room

Thanks John. Yes I have done, it is for a garden office/gym. However given the placement of the building and the proximity to neighbours I wouldn't really want it higher than 2.5m anyway, so it's kind of a mutual limitation if that makes sense. I would be worried that if rejected as well for any...

Maximising Useable Height in Block & Brick Garden Room

Hi, I'm hoping to embark on a rather large (50sqm) garden room project. I'm looking to do this under permitted development so I will be limited to a total height of 2.5m above ground level. It will of course require building regs approval because of electrical work, boiler etc. I was hoping...

    Acceptable Steel Deviation

Thanks for the replies. It's the former, i.e. a long post (6m) fixed at one end and then cantilevered in the middle. The end post and the middle post heights are mm perfect so the 'bend' is just in the last 3.25m. Thanks for the info. I've passed this along, however given the cost involved...

    Acceptable Steel Deviation

Hi, the steels are all the correct size and I don't rally think it's a case of deflection as there is no load on them as yet, it's actually that the centre steel was produced 'bent' for want of a better word at one end. The steel company say that this degree of bending (40mm) is within their...

    Acceptable Steel Deviation

Hi, We've just had the first part of a large steel structure installed for our house extension. The key feature of this room/house is that internally there will be a two storey ceiling with one corner being a combination of bi-folding doors and fixed glazing above. The cool part is that there...

Terminating sockets with a plug instead of an FCU

Thanks again for your detailed reply. Like I've mentioned in my post above, I take a good look at everything and decide if it is indeed the right approach to adopt.

Terminating sockets with a plug instead of an FCU

Not at all, from what I've heard it is not 'wrong' it merely isn't best practise and/or the most efficient use of time/effort in various situations. I would not do it in my home because my home is of a standard construction with existing standard systems and I would demand a certain level of...

Terminating sockets with a plug instead of an FCU

Not ignoring it, just genuinely didn't see that post! I guess that doesn't make me a fool luckily, because I have had discussions with the local authorities, am officially NOT changing it's use, am adhering to all fire precautions, escape routes, etc etc. I merely had a question regarding the...

    ah, got it. Thanks again!

Terminating sockets with a plug instead of an FCU

Ok many thanks. Totally agree regarding the professional thing, but this is a bit of a quick hack and easily removable once the lease expires in the future, I certainly wouldn't do it in my home! :) Just wanted to ensure I wasn't missing anything stupid/obvious. Out of interest, why are...

Terminating sockets with a plug instead of an FCU

Thanks, they are indeed radial. But does it make any difference if they are added via a plug rather than wired directly?

Terminating sockets with a plug instead of an FCU

I acknowledge that the title and the subject sounds a bit daft and is likely to get me some flak, but bear with me I'll explain what I'm trying to achieve. I'm leasing a old barn and am trying to give it a bit of a cheap facelift and make it into a photography studio for myself. This involves...
