If it replaced will it still cause problems, ive later found out that this type mg is well known for head gaskets going. Would you advise getting rid of it ?

I have a 1999 MGF convertable is it the head gasket whenI arrivd home the oil hd gone in to the water tank and was splurting all brown sludge out. The temperature is ok and th ecar has not overheated.

I have an N reg combo van 1700 diesal and I cannot get reverse and 5th gear. All the other gears are fine, could anyone help please Is the problem going to to be major is it worth getting done ? Thank you Vanessa
