If it's got the K series engine you can bet your life on head gasket failure.

If it replaced will it still cause problems, ive later found out that this type mg is well known for head gaskets going. Would you advise getting rid of it ?

There were some modifications made to this engine (specifically to the cyl hd gasket and fittings) if the job is done properly with the mods then it should be more reliable.

Dont drive the car. You are lucky that yours failed without overheating. Dont now go and make a strait forward repair into an expensive one by driving till it overheats.
Change the head gasket. Also be sure to change the thermostat to one with a small bypass hole/ valve in it. Change water pump and pressure cap on the water resivour too as these will fail soon if they have not done so already.

go to www.mg-rover.org forum. They have everything you need to know about these cars. Dont sell it. Just fix it properly (by someone experienced with mg or rover cars) and it should be fine for many more thousand miles.

Hi,

Thanks, the water pump has gone previously a few months back so was renewed then. Will it need to be renewed again ? that cost £400 the last time, please dont say I have to pay that again. A lo of people will not work on it and giving me silly quotes for gasket at £1500 what should I be looking at to pay.

£400 to change the water pump
I hope they changed the cam belt and tensioner for that price.

Did it overheat before water pump was changed. That could have caused this head gasket failure.

£1500 to change HG

should be more like £500 including head skimming, although some garages probably give a high price because they do not know how to do the job properly and get customers coming back with it failed again a short time later.

go to a specialist mg-rover (or landrover, as freelanders have the same engine with the same problem) garage.
