The Telegraph's Central Heating "Expert" - controv

Run the hot water and heating continuously? does he think we're all rich like him or what That would ramp up my gas bill no end as we have the water on for just 20 minutes a day in two 10 minute slots 12 hrs apart which keeps it piping hot, couldn't do that with my previous boiler and...

The End of frozen condense pipes.

Just had my boiler fail symbol flashing so I called the emergency help line and a message said they had an unprecedented number of calls and to check the condense pipe isn't blocked. I discovered it was frozen along it's entire 3mtre length as presumably the water had backed up after the...

o.k. thanks for that, maybe that's normal for the first year but likely to need a clean next time ?

    serviced or not?

We had a bloke come to give our boiler it's first year service, he took the front cover off the boiler via its 2 screws & then started using an electronic device. he said he could tell that the boiler didn't need cleaning by the reading he got on his device so there was no need to open it up...

    faulty two way switch ?

Why would I do that ? it's a perfectly handy tool for for a quick check on live wires with the amount of testing I would be likely to do, I do have a multimeter also

    faulty two way switch ?

Just fitted a new low energy bulb on the top landing -the newer ones that light faster & we noticed that even when it's off there is a slight flicker every now & again. I tested the bulbholder with my mainstester screwdriver & when it's off it still gives a faint glow off the live pin. It's...

    wiring & loft insulation

Recovering our loft with insulation that expands to about 300mm, the instructions say do not lay over any wiring or reroute if necessary, lol but it's impossible with insulation this thick, in some parts there are more wires than others but what is the danger if any of laying over wiring ?

    Cheap, temporary insulation?

Considering you can currently get 4ft wide rolls of loft insulation for just £5 at B&Q & other outlets it's a not worth looking for older stuff from skips Filled my campervan up with it & currently adding a second layer all over the loft :P

    New radiators not heating

You say you 'had them installed' did the fitter not get it running properly in the first place or was it fitted by a non plumber friend or whatever?

    Concealed Cistern

Fix it by raising the cistern, this gives more of a powerfull flush, the reverse of my original problem. I had a concealed cistern & fitted it at the height limit of the curved pipe & when it flushed it spilled over the bowl. Lowered it a couple of inches & it flushes perfectly. You will...

    fitting cloakroom extractor fan

Inside the loft requires lying on my belly to drill ,outside is over a glass veranda that requires scaffolding

    fitting cloakroom extractor fan

To comply with current regs I have to fit an extractor fan in our new upstairs toilet. It's a large dormer attic room & behind the wall is the loft area & the soilpipe with durgo which runs 3.5 mtrs to the wall to connect to the exterior vertical soil pipe. Getting this pipe thru the brick wall...

Is a lead water pipe a problem?

My dads got lead pipes running from the road to the bathroom & kitchen where only the final connections are copper. He's lived there since 1961 & he's just turned 90 with no bad health problems so I wouldn't worry at all

Reducing Flow Rate from a High Level Cistern

I solved mine by simply lowering the cistern which then reduces the distance the water drops & it stops it splashing over altho mine is a hidden cistern type I guess the same principle must apply. If lowering isn't an option then raise the bog & provide steps :P

    is it busy out there

People haven't got the money & are wary of the high cost of calling in a gasfitter/plumber. This is why this forum is full of DIYers like myself A guy my sister rang wanted £80 just to turn up & look at the boiler, then he would give a price for the repair , he wanted the £80 for 20 minutes...

    single voltage shaver socket

Thanks for the info guys, the shaver socket is for a small room with just toilet & washbasin but presumably it's still classed as a bathroom ?

    single voltage shaver socket

Why are shaving sockets seemingly only made in dual voltage? I want to fit a single voltage shaver socket in a standard square pattress, don't want a cumbersome dual voltage with bulky transformer that won't fit where I want to put it but can't seem to find one in local diy stores .

Ideal Icos knocking - low water pressure?

Exactly what we had after our spanky new icos HE24 was fitted by warmfront, it only did it on hot water only not with heating on. The clonking lasted about 3 mintutes then all went silent It is only air & sounds worse than it is but in our case after two visits they discovered it was the gate...
