    Cost of oil boiler

Ah right guys, it’s the online search. I’m entering “oil combi boiler” and it’s returning gas boilers in the results. Oil is dearer than gas right?

    Cost of oil boiler

Hi I’m nowhere near gas mains out here. My oil boiler seems to be on its last legs. If I just get a similar new replacement boiler fitted, any ideas how much I would be looking at? 2-bed bungalow. Seen some boilers just north of 1100 quid for the boiler not fitting. Old one is a combi. Cheers Terry

    Dimensions of machine screw head

Yes it’s a low torque, I hadn’t thought through. As you say it’s just nipped up. Bloke who services it doesn’t know his own strength. Probably have a look tomorrow.

Thanks John, might give it another go then!

    Dimensions of machine screw head

It may push trace amounts of oil along the prop shaft in operation but then it hasn’t run since last service.

    Dimensions of machine screw head

Thanks John. The book says tighten the level plug to 7 Nm 5.2 ft-lb. Not sure how tight that is. I have a torque wrench (my Dad’s) (and I’m 75!) so I don’t know how accurate it is. Don’t want to strip the thread! Or for the plug to come out while running, though it might survive that. Mind you I...

    Dimensions of machine screw head

Yeah looks like the driver bit would survive, but would it damage the slot if it wasn’t the same thickness as the slot, 2 mm or thereabouts?

Is this half inch socket on one end and a screwdriver tip on t’other?

    Dimensions of machine screw head

Hi John, no not rusted or anything. It’ll a level plug for the gearbox oil in an outboard motor. The manual quotes a torque when re-fitting - not sure how to torque a screwdriver!

    Dimensions of machine screw head

Hi I need to undo a machine screw. Iris slotted but very tight. A screw driver as broad as the slot tends to just twist and would damage the slot. I need a screwdriver to square drive bit as thick as the slot - any ideas pls? Terry

    Bench dog clamps

Rsgaz thank you. I wondered if that was how it worked but wanted to check. I want something to hold down a straight edge guide (eg a bit of 3 ply) on top of the work but still be low enough for the motor of a circular saw to pass over it. Thanks from Terry

    Bench dog clamps

Pls can you tell me how “bench dog clamps” work? Those I’ve looked at seem to consist of a tube 19 or 20 mm with an arm at right angles to that and an overcentre clamp on the end of the arm. I don’t understand why when you operate the clamp the tube doesn’t just slide up out of the hole in the...

    Sliding mitre saw

Thanks ETAF & gonch69. JobAndKnock yeah guess so, maybe I’m just mentally thinking of my circular saw which is hard start, but a mitre saw is not hand-held so doesn’t need soft start. (I’m not an engineer but going from stationary to 5000 rpm in a nothingth of a second just doesn’t feel right to...

    Sliding mitre saw

JobAndKnock, thanks for advice. By the way the guys next door, dunno what they’re using but they’re doing a fantastic job. Actually that’s partly why I’m looking for a SMS - I foresee a lot of DIY here to “keep up with the Joneses” next door when they get finished :-) so this place doesn’t look...

    Sliding mitre saw

Thank you all. I tend to go for DeWalt, my circular saw & drill-driver are DeWalt, but they can be dearer. Bells and whistles seem to be in short supply on DeWalt SMS’s though. E.G. how much could soft start and trench cut add to production costs on their £220 quid models? - Terry

Diver Fred yes I love soft start. And I would prefer double bevel. - Terry
