Thx for your advice

Vibration, through using the stairs has caused the plaster or filler to crack where the wall meets the stair string ( timber). I have cleaned out and filled with decorators caulk, the caulk is holding to both timber and wall but cracks are still appearing above the caulk about half an inch away...

I do not think you should worry about the white going onto the walls. The wall paint will cover it ok as long as you using good paint aqnd using correct number of coats.This is my experience anyway.
