Vibration, through using the stairs has caused the plaster or filler to crack where the wall meets the stair string ( timber). I have cleaned out and filled with decorators caulk, the caulk is holding to both timber and wall but cracks are still appearing above the caulk about half an inch away from the timber. Any tips or ideas?

Because the plaster is inert and wont shrink and the wood is always expanding and contracting it is very difficult to stop this problem. I have in the past cleaned and sanded the area where the wall meets the timber string. Find some nice quadrant beading and using Pink Grip or similar, glue the bead to the wall keeping it free from the timber. there should be a fine gap between bead and string thus allowing the string to flex under the bead without any cracks showing. When its painted up only a fine line between the two would be seen.
