What is this on my walls?

I am in the process of stripping wall paper off my walls, and have come across a covering I don't know what it is. Can you help? Please see the attached picture, the light brown to the right is backing paper, the tan in the middle is the unknown, and the pinky surface is the plaster. The...

100mm insulation between 5x2 rafters too much?

I would and have done in the past battened out to allow the ventilation gap of 40-50mm. Its unlikely you will get exactly 52mm timber to match the existing rafters, so you will have a bit of a gap either side of the PIR board at the face, that if you want to fill will expanding foam. I didn't...

100mm insulation between 5x2 rafters too much?

What sort of insulation are you using, if 100mm mineral wool, how about 75mm PIR board as will have about the same thermal qualities.

    Sheared oven rack guide bolt

Whilst cleaning my oven I tried to take out the oven rack guides to clean them. All the bolts came out fine other than one that sheared leaving a thread in there. Question is, how do I get it out, or is there any alternatives to hang the rack guides? Picture is of sheared bolt and how it should...

Filling gaps between floor board (decorative)

I have a room in a 1930 house which i am renovating, which has a tongue and groove wooden floor. The issue is that there are 3-5mm gaps between the T&G boards that collect a load of crap and makes it a pain to clean. It is varnished and as part of the renovation i am going to sand it back and...

    Soundproof/Waterproof Bathroom Stud Wall

Having to panes the same thickness causes a resonance known as a coincidence dip towards the higher frequencies, the resonance allows more sound to be transmitted through the glazing at this frequency dip. In regards to the partition wall above having two layers of different thickness board on...

    plasterboarding over wallpapered ceiling

We are in a 1930's house with very tall ceilings, the previous owner has wall papered the ceiling. I don't know why they did this, if it was just the fashion at the time or if it was to support the aging lathe and plaster. Anyway its time for the wall paper to go (i hate the stuff). rather than...

Washing machine blowing fuse at end of program

Right, just tried the washing machine again and now is working?? On the second fuse I presumed had blown. Double checked the first fuse and that is definitely blown. Not sure what has been going on. Will run it over a few more cycles to see if it replicates the fuse blowing.

Washing machine blowing fuse at end of program

The house circuit it is on has a RCD at the consumer box. When the fuse blows it doesn't trip the RCD on that circuit. Sound as though I need to open it up and look for anything out of the ordinary. Not significant water below the washer.

Washing machine blowing fuse at end of program

Pretty sure the fuse is gone as tried it in another appliance, and a continuity test on a multimeter. Both indicate blown fuse, new 13A fuse in plug (that was deemed good by continuity test) made it work again for another cycle, until I switched it off and blew

Washing machine blowing fuse at end of program

Manual rotary switch like this; http://c8.alamy.com/comp/E4M1AN/a-zanussi-washing-machine-control-panel-E4M1AN.jpg '0' at the top is the off switch that it appears to blow the fuse after the cycle.

Washing machine blowing fuse at end of program

It seems that when I turn it off at the end of the cycle that it when it blows. I have run out of 13A fuses, so I need to test it to see what happens is I turn it on and off without setting it on a cycle. If it is the door release do you know where I could source a part?

cheers for that, so basically at the cut of the joist, span to the adjacent joists. i think that would work as the area is joist at that point is not bearing a significant load, if any (its the cupboard under the stairs)
