External Masonry paint finish damaged by failed Cavity Wall insulation?

How do you know that the damage is caused by failed CWI? Do you have proof or is this just an assumption? Failed CWI is not as common as some would have us believe. Please read my blog on this subject... http://buildingdefectanalysis.co.uk/damp/should-we-demonise-all-cwi/

Suspended wooden floor causing high humidity.

Cheers Converting the floor to solid construction would solve the issue if done properly but you would need specialist advice to make sure this doesn't cause problems elsewhere It would never solve the problem and in fact would drive moisture into the wall base under hydrostatic pressure.

Please help!! Dampness due to high humidity

Positive pressure systems are a complete waste of money so do not install one. The BRE recently completed a piece of research on their effectiveness both at the BRE's test property and on a housing estate in Wales. The upshot of all this is that residents imagined that they made a difference...

Ventilation of shower / bathroom - what would you do?

With regards to reducing heat losses then hopefully you'll have understood that installing a single room HRF is your best and most cost effective option for doing this but they're circa £200.00 Also interestingly, the heat recovery rate is roughly halved when running at boost speed. The...

Ventilation of shower / bathroom - what would you do?

Yes, this is a problem, if there is a trickle vent in the same room then it should be closed or it will indeed short circuit the extraction process. Fans are meant to draw air from other rooms and not from the room they are located in.

    Asbestos

If you're really concerned, simply have an air test done to check for fibres indoors. This will settle the issue unequivocally.

Little bedroom's ceiling is infested with moulds

More brilliant advice... I guess it was only a matter of time before you also advised residents to turn up their heating to compensate for the drastic heat loss from the open windows. I love this advice, open your windows and turn up the heating (Which will only be lost via the open window...

Little bedroom's ceiling is infested with moulds

I'l now explain how an extractor fans works better than an open window, which doesn't actually work at all. When I advise clients to install extractor fans, I advise then to install silent and continuous running fans. The reason for this is that air changes are managed over a 24 hour period so...

Little bedroom's ceiling is infested with moulds

You don't appear to even know the difference between humidity and condensation, both very different things. You think that when your glasses steam up a room is full of condensation? Is this the benchmark for how you offer advice to your clients. You tell them if their glasses steam up they need...

Little bedroom's ceiling is infested with moulds

Wrong about what? Really? Wrong about offering advice to open windows to deal with condensation! You really are a hypocrite. You bring this thread down by calling me a jumped up extractor fan salesman and then have the audacity to call me arsey. Your question is so unsophisticated it is...

Little bedroom's ceiling is infested with moulds

Ah, I see to save face you've moved the issue to asking how opening one window chills the fabric of a house? I feel sure that its not a question that anyone but you needs answering but do you even understand the basics of heat loss in buildings and can you not understand how a lower external air...

Little bedroom's ceiling is infested with moulds

No, you're talking rubbish Noseall. I'm not a jumped up extractor fan salesman, or indeed a jumped up builder like yourself. I'm a Chartered Builder and a Chartered Building Engineer. I've been teaching damp investigation and remediation since 2006 and also do a great deal of expert witness work...

Little bedroom's ceiling is infested with moulds

You have just quoted one of the biggest myths to support the ridiculous idea that opening windows is good. Opening windows in bathrooms only appears to deal with the condensation but in fact the humidity is immediately given up as condensation in the room thereby giving the impression that it...

Little bedroom's ceiling is infested with moulds

I did, in the previous post to yours but what do you mean by a room 'full of condensation'. How do you prove this before offering the advice that windows should be opened? Most condensation is cold surface surface condensation caused by poor insulation and cold bridging so ventilation is only...

    Dry Rot Help!

You could have dry rot, that certainly looks like hyphae (feeder strands) extending across the brickwork and this is one of the reasons that dry rot can be so destructive; the hyphae has the ability to spread across inert materials such as brick. Treatment is straightforward... 1. Eliminate...

Little bedroom's ceiling is infested with moulds

Let me be clear, uncontrolled ventilation is bad news, it causes transient condensation. Ventilation has to be managed through the judicious use of extractor fans and not by opening windows! If you know anything about condensation you'll know that warm air holds more moisture than cool air. It's...

Little bedroom's ceiling is infested with moulds

Do not open the windows, this is very bad advice and BS5250 is very clear on effective methods of ventilation, opening windows is not one of them! Ventilation has to be carefully managed. Ventilation is important but its not everything, it's simply a potential factor that needs addressing. It...

Ventilation of shower / bathroom - what would you do?

Hardly worth the effort of researching really considering you've chosen to fit a cheap £18 fan. Wait to see how long it is before you start having problems with the humidistat switch. You should avoid them like the plague and especially cheap and nasty Schneider fans. I've also advised you that...
