Thank you for your reply. I am sorry that I have taken so long to reply. I have changed the washer and the banging is all but silent now. It bangs occasionally first thing in the morning and it is a much quiter banging. The ball valve seems to be fitted as well as possible. So...

The area did have a coal mine very near by 20/30 years ago. But these are not coal miners cottages etc. The estate was built in the 60's. Thank you.
