Does anyone have a copy of the latest (5th eddition) Electrical Installation Design Guide on them and can look up the current demand assumed for a lighting outlet in a domestic setting?
I recall it has been updated from 100W to 30W, but I don't have a copy of the Electrical Installation Design...
So section 7.4.2 in the OSG (Currently page 93) says that Band 1 data cables and Band 2 mains power cables need to be 150mm apart from each other, except under certain cases defined under sub section (a) like where they are enclosed in a separate conduit, are of mineral insulated type, etc...
So let's say I bought a old house that needed a full re-wire for example and I wanted to do the re-wire all myself (obviously complying to BS7671), what is the process regarding involving the local councils building control when doing notifiable electrical work under Part P.
I assume you need...
So following having a read the other day of both the on site guide and the full BS7671 regs that I have, it dawned on me how much of a impact grouping of cables as per table 4C1 has, and how I suspect that what my electrician did back in 2013, violates the regs.
I'm trying to work out that if...
So lets say you were doing a re-wire and needed to chase out walls to run new cables, would you bother using capping over the new cables before plastering over the chase to fill it in, and if so, would you use plastic or metal capping?
I know that both plastic and metal capping provide no...
So for notifiable work that falls under the part P of building regulations, work has to be certified and signed off to the local building authority.
From what I know, the typical way this is done is either using a "certified" electrician who is registered with self-certification scheme like...
Say you had a cable running horizontally through floor joists without any thermal insulation (assuming horizontal cable support requirements were met), how is one supposed to know how much to de-rate the cable by and what the de-rated current carrying capacity is for a given conductor size...
As I understand it, at the time of writing this (01/04/2025), AFDD's are not mandatory under the current BS7671 18th edition Amendment 3 in most typical domestic settings, however is it worth fitting them if a old place was getting re-wired, say a 3 bed semi detached house? (Yes I know it's the...
Can mains Smoke/Heat alarms share the same electrical circuit in the domestic distribution board/consumer unit as an Intruder alarm under building regs/BS7671/ what ever regulation covers mains smoke alarms?
Just seems wasteful to waste two ways in a electrical distribution board, not to...
Table 54.7 in BS7671 says that when the protective conductor is the same material as the line conductor (S), it must at least be the same size as the line conductor.
Why does 1.5mm² T&E not comply with this reg when you have 1.5mm² line conductors and 1mm² protective/CPC conductor!?
Can some...
With the 18th edition (don't have a copy yet), what applications can you still use conventional plastic cable clips?
Do you have to use metallic cable clips holding cables on to joists in the void between ceilings and the floor above, and how about attic spaces?
Regards: Elliott.
Hi all, does anyone know if the online/digital version of the latest edition of BS7671 has been published yet?
I am sure previous editions of BS7671 you could get in digital form, but can't find the digital version of the 18th edition on IET's website.
Anyone know anything about this...
Under Regulation 411.3.1.1 (Page 55 of the 17th edition of BS7671 Amendment 3), as quoted;
It is clear that that a CPC must be included in all fixed wiring except for Class 2 lamp holders, even if it is a Class 2 device at the other end.
Yet people still use the "earth" core in flex as a live...
Was reading an article on IET about whether it is permissible to exceeded the voltage drop limits in certain situations.
Thus to further expanded the original question on IET; would it ever be acceptable if one exceeded the 5% voltage drop for power circuits / 3% voltage drop for lighting...
