... BMW think it's a good idea. They can wrap it up any way they want, to me it's just another way to extract more £££ from the consumer. Yeah yeah, they're a business that operates to make profit and all that. I agree with progress, I fully understand it's better that we're not still running around in Model T Ford's. However if they're going to introduce more and more stuff like this, to me it's going too far.

And how would sir like to pay for the braking module software licence in the vehicle? One off payment, annual recurring or monthly recurring?

I think they are basically saying we will build one car with everything on it and you can pay after sale to enable the features?

I’d be interested to know if the license was assignable. Otherwise your car could get stripped back when you sell it.

Tesla did this when selling end of lease cars. To be fair they weren’t advertising them as having the feature.

We await aftermarket jailbreak kits to enable the features at a fraction of the cost.

If that's the road they're going down, that's exactly what will happen.

Or a p*ssed off software engineer leaking the access codes online...

Managed to 'upgrade' a few basic TV's over the years without the extra costs that way!

Along with disabling printer 'end of life' shutdowns...

I see what you're saying but surely that wouldn't be financially viable for them? e.g. every car leaves the production line with additional components fitted (for heated seats etc) but a % of them are never used. Cost of part/s fitted but no return revenue from it.
