Karoline Leavitt has stated this is going ahead from 1st Feb

Let’s see if it happens and what effect it has

S & P 500 reaction doesn’t seem terribly good…..I hope it doesn’t tank my Vanguard trust

Trudeau reiterated that less than 1% of the fentanyl and illegal crossings into the US come from Canada.

That is Trump's stated reason for the tariffs.

Trump should face up to the fact that Americas appalling opioid crisis was caused by the healthcare system.

It’s corporate America that is the root behind its terrible drug problem (and wealth inequality).

“OxyContin contributed to a modern opioid epidemic with lasting repercussions, and now fentanyl has brought the overdose crisis to a new level.”

His public stance is obvious nonsense. But what is Trump really after. Nobody seems sure. The thing that makes most sense is that he is trying to get motor manufactures to relocate back to the USA from Canada. He failed miserably at this during his first term, so maybe he is obsessed with it as unfinished business

Strangely enough, fewer people are dying these days...all the hardcore addicts are already dead.

His MO seems purely to shock, decision after decision. Tariffs, leaving the WHO "oh that's a biggie", picks for his team such as a former Fox news host and RFK Jr. It's almost as if he thinks, "they'll never expect it, let's make the headlines by doing that".

Good discussion earlier this morning on R4 about it. Seemingly China are moving production across different Asian countries, especially Cambodia. China still export the materials but avoid tariffs, and have a lot more influence across the region as a bonus.

Who is being played again ?

Tariffs are a very blunt tool and he is dealing with very sharp people.

The US have traditionally welcomed foreign manufacturers to set up camp in the US., same thing surely.

Trump knows that being controversial he gets endless media attention.

Trump makes lots of threats and claims how he wins……but he often just drops his unrealistic threats claiming he won when in fact he capitulated……which nobody notices because by then he is spouting off about some new sh1t

Yes, but pushing China to invest in Asia, while they becoming the place those countries turn to first is the exact opposite of setting up in America. One is encouraging investment, the other is actively driving it away.

Mark Carney (former Bank of England boss, now running to be Canada's PM) was interviewed on tv last night about this. In summary, he said Canada will not be bullied into anything and if Trump thinks otherwise, he's in for a shock.

Will be interesting to see if it's all bluster, or if Canada will back down.

And, for arguments sake, let's assume China set up shop in America to avoid tariffs. Costs will be higher as they cannot possibly make low cost items as they do now. You may think that's a good thing but it will only mean costs rising sharply in the States, while Trump has promised to lower them.
