Morning all,

I need to replace the barrel locks on my conservatory doors (previous owner doesn't have any keys, no idea what's happened to them), and I was wondering whether it's possible to have 2 barrel locks that use the same key? I imagine you could change all the pins to match the other lock, it sounds fiddly though, any other options? It's just for convenience sake really.

Also, since I don't have the keys to unlock the doors in the first place, I'm going to have to try pick the lock in order to remove it, is it legal to pick your own locks? I'd be doing it from inside of course :p

Thanks

It's perfectly possible to buy new locks for doors and have them matched so both use the same key. Are they the euro lock type barrels? From your description it sounds like they are.
To get the locks unlocked, you'd probably be better off getting a locksmith out to do them for you. Less chance of damaging the conservatory doors.
Locks can be "bumped." Do a google search for bumping locks and it'll throw up loads of results.
If you go down the locksmith route, do a bit of research and choose a reputable one. Some will just come out and drill the locks out (bad)

Yes it's perfectly legal to pick your own locks, but I'd also advise going down the locksmith route and have them open the doors and supply a pair of new cylinders keyed-alike. Most locksmiths will have the doors open before you could google bumping and watch a few videos.

Nothing wrong with drilling or snapping a lock if it's going to be replaced. It's bad practice though when keys are available - eg lost keys and spare set in the house, and this is where a skilled locksmith will get you in without damage.
