Why are they fitted.
Is there a risk of arcing between the phases, or is it just whilst the switch is operated.
The reason for asking , I came across a newish 3 phase Live end track connecter, and the screw terminals were only about 10 mm apart, seemed a bit close to me.

They are to prevent arcing across when the switch is made or broken.

Upto 415v I think the seperation distance only needs to be about 3mm when the switch is open. (Could be wrong about this bit.)
