3 port valve

Apart from having 2 less wires, whats the difference between a 3 wire and 5 wire 3 port valve?

What do the extra 2 wires do?

A three wire valve is a divertor valve and is only open to one port at any time. A five wire valve has a midposition so you it will open to two ports at the same time if required to do so.

Three wire= Live, Neutral and earth........puerly to wind a motor

Five wires= Neutral, CH on, Hotwater off, Permanant live and switched live.

The Chentral heaing on wire will drive the valve half way to the mod position but when the c/h on and DHW off are live it will drive the motor all the way to the open one port only.

3 port mid position is hot water, hot water and central heating, central heating only, a three port diverter valve is hot water or central heating not both, the standard wiring colours(depending on valve) are mid position first, orange hot water on grey hot water off brown heating on blue neutral y/green earth,diverter brown motor open blue neutral g/yellow earth, these are for basic systems but the actual wiring can be very different, as always check manufacturers instructions

Permanent live? I thought only 2 port valves had permanent live, and that 3 ports were switched live?
