45mm bath fitting

Help! I am middle of plumbing in a new bathroom and am attempting to fit a bath waste filler. But the pre-drilled 45mm hole in the bath will not take the horseshoe shaped spacer (which appears to be 50mm).The spacer has 3 lugs on it , can i cut these off or would it be better to file corresponding holes into the existing hole.
Any words of wisdom out there? as the family is starting to smell

Waste Filler

..........Whatever you`ve got it`s not a standard thing for a UK bath....the holes in baths have been the same size for the last 50 years

and the waste fittings have been made to fit accordingly
