A heating mystery

I have moved into a property with gas c.h and all the radiators have valves and valve tops which are identical. My problem is which one do I use to regulate the radiator. I dont want to upset the balancing. If I switch on the system and then feel which end heats up first does that mean it would be the end to regulate from.Or is there some other way to check.

Yes , what you have described is the simplest way to do it.

You could turn one end off or on and count the number of turns it takes to do so, then you would know where to put them back to if you got the wrong end, or upset the balancing.

You are however, assuming that the system has been balanced correctly in the first place.
