A sharp knife

That’s why a steel is a convenient one tool for all

Might do more damage to a knife if not used properly though (to which there is a degree of skill, strength, and aptitude).

The OP has decent knives, wants to care for them, but (reading between the lines) has no experience beyond dragging them through a sharpener.

FWIW, I had a steel, and never got close to the results that I do with a stone.
IME, a stone is easier to get better results with.
