hi i live in a voctorian house. The fires we had before were old gas fires. Behind was a hole which had be boarded up. I have since removed the fire. I have just looked at the opening of my fire. i have noticed two metal bars running across into the brick work. are these the lintels. i was expecting the lentel to be made of concete. it looks like the hole has been made smaller at some point due to their being partly built up brick on either side of the fire opening but this is my assumption. I have a fire that i want to fit into this hole but the metal bar is slightly in the way. I am wanting to know if it would be safe to remove the metal bar or do i need a builder..
