The joists in my loft are 1x3 which is a bit thin and weak. Since we plan to store quite a bit of tools and other stuff in the loft, we decide to add new 2x6 joists into the loft to have a solid foundation for loft boards.

Here is my question: I found the old joists are sitting directly on the brick wall with no nails(at least I couldn’t see) or wood wall plates underneath them, so for the new joists, should I just put them onto the bricks as well or should I use some kind of brackets to fix it with the bricks?

The house has stood very long as is, without the ceilings falling in?

There were not much things in the loft except insulation, so the ceiling are fine and the joists are not visibly bent

The self weight of the new floor should keep everything in place, but you could fix through the joists direct into the brick.
