Hello, my first post here, so please be gentle :)

I'm replacing an old wall light. The issue is that the old one has a pull cord switch in the fitting and the new one has to be controlled by an external switch. So I need to find a way of installing this switch.

I've looked at the reference here and it looks like I should wire in the new switch using a junction box - is this correct?

My other question: given that they have to be inspectable and can't be plastered over, is it simplest to run the cable between the switch and the fitting it is to control, from a junction box in the ceiling cavity (with the cables buried in the plaster)?

Thanks in advance.

You could install a new switch directly below the wall light at the same height as all your others.

Run a T&E cable up to the light either surface or flush and make you connection inside the wall light plate. No junction box required.

You don't have to use a full size switch, you could use one of these

thanks for the reply.

I've fitted both of the lights now, I went to my local electric supplier - no, not B&Q :D - and got a pull switch mechanism that (only just) fitted inside the fitting. It's very neat and it's something that wouldn't have occured to me. Thank god for independent shops staffed by brainy blokes!
