thanks to all - i'm now clear (even if not what i wanted to hear)

Bongus - no not concerned by RCD - just wanted to claify the new cable burying regs didn't apply to old cable in situe.

Next steps - try and get out of the council what they want - they've not been overly helpful so far so fingers crossed!

Seems the first thing you should be doing is to replace the cu, and you don't have the knowledge to do that.

And the second thing would be to do something about the fact that you've got almost 1.2kW of lighting just for one floor - that's outrageous.
