Is it possible to connect a monitor to a laptop so that i can work on the laptop screen but others can view what i'm doing on the stand-alone monitor? If so, do i need any special hardware, cables or software to do this?

You may have to toggle through the various Fn keys to get both the external monitor and laptop screen to work simultaneously ie same keys three times as once may be laptop lcd only, second is external monitor only and third is both lcd and monitor.
Often the keyboard Fn screen has a small logo showing which key to switch the output. Also try Crtl+Fn and Alt+Fn and Shift+Fn as differnt laptops vary as to which combination to use.
Regards
Fozzie
