advice for gap from french doors

Recently had new flooring fitted (replacing carpet) in a house we just bought, there was a existing large piece of wood that would sit over the gap, i believe they are called a threshold?, we now have this gap, we did ask if the flooring could go up to the door but the floor fitter said he could not get it on top of the door frame,

does anyone have any suggestions on what we could put in place, theres quite the draught from the gap coming in, we have the old threshold but its double the width so we was thinking of trimming it down if no other solutions were suggested?

Ahh yes, that definitely needs finishing off properly, especially if you can feel a draught coming through.

What you’re missing is a threshold strip, and it would have been covering that gap before. The fitter’s right that the floor can’t sit on top of the door frame if there isn’t enough clearance, but it should still be neatly finished rather than left exposed like that.

If you’ve still got the old threshold, trimming it down could absolutely work. As long as you cut it neatly and refit it securely, it’ll tidy the edge up and help block the cold air.

That said, you might find it looks a bit bulky once it’s cut down. A neater option is a new slim door threshold or trim designed for LVT or laminate. You can get oak, brushed aluminium, or colour-matched profiles that sit much flatter and look more intentional.

We actually sell door thresholds and matching trims in finishes designed to complement common wood tones, so you can usually get something very close to your flooring colour rather than it standing out.

Before fitting anything, I’d also just double check where the draught is actually coming from — sometimes it’s the door seal or the gap under the frame rather than the flooring itself.

But either way, you definitely want something covering that edge. It’s one of those small details that makes a big difference to how finished the room feels.
