Hi everyone, this contraption is located near my water cylinder and it makes an annoying noise at random intervals. Sometimes it stops for a while and other times it comes reguarly. It sounds like this is a normal noise when the unit is in operation but it's very disturbing, especially during the night. It comes on regardless of whether the water heater is on or off.

My flat is fully electric and this system is for the hot water only as the heating system is freestanding electric heaters.

My questions then:

1. What is this thing?
2. Does it need to be there?
3. Any way to make it less noisy/turn the f***er off?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

That's a pressurisation pump for your water, nothing to do with heating at all. You'll probably find that it runs when you turn a shower on, or possibly even runs when all taps are turned on.

If it's running in the middle of the night you've probably got a dripping tap somewhere, or a ball valve dripping and causing your tank to overflow.

There'll be an isolation switch somewhere, but you'd be better off getting the drip fixed
