Hi, all,

You know the way that these things start, too long in the pub and everybody knows everything there is to knoe about every possible subjust on the planet?

Well, they couldn't suss this one out!

What do you guys think this strange device is for?

It's an 'Eclipse 39' The larger set of wheels are offset to the axle, so they operate like cams.

All and any help gratefully accepted!

Cheers,

Bob

Where did you get it Bob? Surely you didn't purchase a tool that you had no idea of its use?
Anyway, 'Eclipse'... Best use I reckon... weighing down the rest of the rubbish in ya bin. :)

chisel sharpener

you wheel it to and fro over the stone

Its an Eclipse drill bit sharpener.

I had one until I bought it to work & then someone tried sharpening 100+ drill bits he'd been saving on it. :(

Worked quite well.

The drill bit fits in the groove & you use it on an oil stone.

Saw the thread title and thought it was about our favourite septic gun-totin' plumber...

The cam effect of the other set of wheels allows it to wobble up & down as it travels, grinding down the entire face of the pointy bit.

If you'd rather sharpen a few drills than get new then I'd suggest putting this away somewhere till needed, it was most useful when I had one.

Used to sharpen cobalt drills by eye on a grindstone. They were used on a CNC sliding head lathe - no guides or safety nets required.

...get it on ebay, with the word 'antique' and you'll make a few quid !!!!!

Well, I'm impressed!

All the resident know-it-all's, many of which are tradesmen, plumbers, wood butchers of one sort or another, had no idea what it was!

What's it worth? I've no idea.

Did I buy it not knowing what it was? No, I got the poison challis of finding out what it was, tried all sorts of places and then suddenly thought, 'forums' a good place for knowledge of all sorts!

I can hand it back to its owner now.

Thanks again guys, I'd be lost without you!

Bob

I bought mine for £5-29p back in 1977. To work out what that is in today's money, I suggest you look at other tool prices rather than use the Mars Bar index. :) :) :)
