Happy New Year, Wizards!

My condensing boiler loses just a wee bit of water each year which I top up twice each year. Previous advice from the forum is that it is nothing too much to worry about except for the loss of the anti-corrosion solution.

Spoke to the British Gas guy when he serviced the boiler. He said:

a) Not to worry about the loss of the anti corrosion solution as it has already done its job coating the system when it was originally put in. Do you agree?

b) He said Fernox can resolve small leaks but can also create other problems. Can it?

c) When the (dumpling) plumber originally put in the anti corrosion three years ago (when the house was built) he could not tell me what type he had put in. I read somewhere that you cannot mix solutions. Is this correct or can I just belt some more of any type in?

Many thanks,

Jim

It is harmful to run without inhibitor if you constantly drain and refill the system.

The Fernox leak sealer can resolve small leaks, I have recommended it to a relative in the past and the now the system never loses pressure even after two years.

Inhibitor manufacturers advise not to mix solutions.

Hi David,

Thank you for that. Is it easy for a plumber to insert Fernox? Can he just insert it into one radiator or does he have to tramp all round the house with big welly boots?

Many thanks again,

Jim

Yes it easy in most circumstances and it can be added via a partially drained radiator.
