By that i mean, what's the pecking order?

Example of a friend, not my choice, but say Striesand... tickets on sale on the 8th, but the venue has presales on the 7th and the 6th, and O2 customers can get them sooner too...

What does a true fan need to do, so they're not sat a third of a mile away?

It's usual when ordering concert tickets, to ask the availability of the seating nearer the front (usually at a premium price though)
Some online ticket sellers show you the seating arrangements at the venue, so you can choose (subject to availability) Remember,, the seating nearest the stage always sells out first.

Thanks JJ, but that's my point... "sells out first"? but to who? and why? and how do i make that me?

A huge proportion of tickets in the best spots are given away to hangers on and for hospitality. The public get the rest, and can pay large fees to sit in the better places. I was lucky enough to get 4 free tickets for a well known group in the nineties after bumping into their lead in a pub and saying I didn't think they were upto scratch the last time I saw them. When we got there we had great seats and realised that all of the surrounding blocks also had vips (with far better tickets than ours). It's no different to what happened at the Olympics. The public are left the scraps .
