Help! Our home was built circa 1950, and in doing some DIY, I decided to remove the ghastly and unsightly cavity vents, which had become clogged and painted over.

So, I chiselled them away with nice new modern plastic ones ready to replace.

However, on removal, I noticed a white fibrous substance floating out into the air.

Question... could this be asbestos? My father in law suggests it's rockwool, based on the fact it is white, and he thinks the asbestos used in cavity wall installations is a bluey grey.

Any advice please?

Yep... the old beggar is right again (as usual!).

I was panicking unduly, and after a quick word with the Estate Agents (who's hands I put it in) it seems that it's rockwool, added during the 90's when solar panelling was added to the roof.

The whole job was covered out with a Welsh Assembly 'helping grant', and there is a large documented area specifying rockwool being pumped into the cavities.

Phew!

Thanks for the double-encouragement though ;)

It's still harmful to breathe in such material, so you should still be wearing a good quality mask.
