backup to cdr

I recently purchased a S/H laptop from E-Bay. It did not come with any discs but XP installed which works fine. I am trying to make a recovery disc via Windows Backup but it will not find an external CD writer, it only wants to use A drive- pretty useless for the amount of data. Can anyone out there help. TIA
