Banging Noise when Toilet Cistern is re-filling ?

Hi

I was wondering if anyone can help ?

Our toilet cistern has started to make a loud thumping / banging / rumbling noise ??

As far as I am aware nothing has changed - we have not touched the mains water tap or added and taps / showers or removed any.

When the noise happens I find that it stops if you open the bath tap, but comes back as soon as you close it.

Is this what is called water hammer ?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Yes its water hammer, if nothing has changed try renewing the washer in the toilet fill valve.
