What paint should I use for painting a bannister? The rest of the woodwork in the hall will be white. And I'm fitting brushed chrome brackets.

I have a feeling gloss white is the wrong paint to use on a bannister. Are there any special paints for hard-wearing purposes like this? Available in the sheds or Screwfix?
