I have just primed all the new fitted skirting boards and arcs in my house. The finish I want is satin whicH I will do for my third coat. What shall I do for the second another primer over the first primer or a undercoat ?

Thanks

If the new architraves and skirts are softwood I would personally give them a coat of undercoat then a coat of crown solo satin. Even though solo is self undercoating I find it better to knot, prime, undercoat then solo on new timber.

If they are MDF then you might get away with crown solo over the primer.

Did you knot the timber before you primed to stop the resin bleeding through subsequent layers?

Hi

Thanks for reply, I did not knot no never heard of it to be honest. I have not primed every room yet. What exactly does knotting mean when you say bleed through ?

The primer I used is dulux trade not cheap stuff. It says primer undercoat, do I have to buy a different undercoat after this or is this classed as the undercoat ? By the way it is softwood.

If a knotting agent is not applied prior to the application of paint the knots will exude resin and deform your paint system, the wil show through as brown ugly often circulur shapes. Over all the primed areas you will now need to apply a stain block paint prior to further application.

O I see. Ok so can you suggest a stain block and also a knotting agent for the timber what I have not touched yet. Then I Will know, prime. Then do I need a undercoat before satin or is the primer the undercoat as it says on the tin primer - undercoat ?

Thanks

With regard to knotting agents I tend to use either Rustins or Colron, yet there is little to no difference regarding any brand. As for stain blockers, Zinsser Bin would be my choice, just bear in mind it's quick drying time and apply it both evenly and quickly.

After I apply the stain block over the primer. Once dried can I paint with my satin over the stain block ?

You are fine to apply a second coat of your primer uc then top coat. So 2 primer/uc's and one top coat is fine, although not that it makes much differance you normally do two coats of satin as its self undercoating.
Another way around the problem of not knotted is two buy an aerosal can of coverstain and spray it onto the area. Bin is spot on but its a bugger to brush out.

I have done 1 primer then 1 stain block, can I apply satin straight over stain block ?

Must have missed this thread somewhere along the line, yet it is hardly when you consider the amount of verbal abuse that has been cast upon me. Stay tuned for i'm sure it will return tonight.

Without doubt dcdec has answered your question, and with regard to the Satin you can if your brush skills are good get away with one one coat, yet for longevity, two would be better.

Well to offer an explanation of past events is something I think for the time being should be my little secret, yet I am fully aware of the culprit. He has passed through this site on a previous occasion and now he has returned using a number of different usernsames. He has not long logged off so further abuse is due, but worry not, to me it will remain to be water of a ducks back.
