The tube in my barrow wheel went (with a *&£^£(*'@#/ huge bang).

Doubt the tube is repairable, so I either buy a new one (it's a common size).

Or replace the wheel with a solid tyre one.

Any experiences or advice to help me decide would be welcome.

You can buy the solid tyre with a plastic wheel at most of the DIY outlets - and they often have two inserts to suit the axle diameter.
It takes a little cobbling up as the axle length often isn't the same, but worth sorting out......I used a large shouldered bolt of the correct diameter to sort mine.

For bouncing up scaffold planks with loads of weight, then the pneumatic tyre does it every time, but for garden waste or whatever the solid tyre is fine. The solid tyre has quite a bit of rubber on it anyway, unlike those steel wheels with a narrow ribbon of tyre.

Go for a pneumatic one. Toolstation had one for about a tenner the other day (on promotion)

Clarification:

I meant this type of solid tyre,

rather than this type.

"puncture proof", and "foam filled" appear to be common terms.
