Can anyone tell me what COMMON, L1 and L2 mean in terms of switches and the differences between L1 and L2. I am studying at college and am trying to understand this as much as possible.
It's a changeover switch for 2 way lighting. Common is common to both L1 and L2.
In one position there's a connection between common and L1 but not L2, in the other position (switched) there's a connection between common and L2 but not L1.
When a light switch is in what most people think of as the 'off' position, it allowes current to flow COM - L2, and when it is in the 'on' position it allows current to flow from COM - L1.
Have a look at lighting circuits and 2-way switching in the wiki to get a bit more info.
By far the most common query on this forum relates to 2-way lighting. You get sick of it!
